Motorcycle Rider Training Course — What's Included

Tampa Motorcycle Training's Basic Rider Course is designed for beginning riders of all ages — including those who have never sat on a motorcycle. You don't need a bike, experience, or any special skills to start. You only need to be comfortable and steady on a bicycle.

The course is split into two parts. Part 1 is the online MSF eCourse — about 5 hours of self-paced online learning completed before your first in-person day. A link is provided in your confirmation email. Email or text your completion certificate to your instructor before arriving.

Part 2 is the in-person range training — 10 hours of hands-on motorcycle instruction spread over two days (~5 hours per day). Class size is capped at eight students, so your instructor can guide every rider individually through each of the 14 structured range exercises — from motorcycle familiarization and the friction zone all the way through emergency swerves and curve judgment.

Small class. Real attention.

With a maximum of 8 students per class, your MSF-certified Rider Coach has time to watch every rider, offer corrections in real time, and build your confidence exercise by exercise. You're not lost in a crowd — you're coached.

Complete Your Florida Endorsement

New Florida riders must complete the required training before adding a motorcycle endorsement. Pass the course, then visit a driver license office. The course does not issue your license. Bring the required identification and pay the applicable licensing fees to finish the process.

How to Get Your Florida Motorcycle Endorsement

  1. Register and complete the online MSF eCourse (link in confirmation email)
  2. Attend both days of the riding range sessions
  3. Pass the 25-question written knowledge test (multiple choice)
  4. Pass the riding skills evaluation — all done at the range
  5. Your completion is entered into the state system
  6. Take your BRC Completion Card to the DMV in your home county
  7. "Motorcycle Also" is added to your driver's license — you're endorsed!

The BRC Completion Card is valid for 1 year. Visit the DMV promptly to finalize your endorsement.

Required Gear — No Exceptions

MSF rules are strict. If you arrive without the required gear you will not be permitted to ride. Loaner helmets and gloves are available if needed.

DOT-approved motorcycle helmet (loaners available)
Long pants
Long-sleeve shirt or jacket
Full shoe or boot covering the ankle
Full-fingered gloves (loaners available)
Valid driver's license in good standing

Motorcycle Safety Training — Skills You'll Build

Part 1 — Online eCourse

~5 hours, self-paced, completed before Day 1

The MSF eCourse covers the mental and strategic side of riding. Work through it on your own schedule before your first in-person day — the fee is included in your tuition.

  • Motorcycle controls and how they work
  • Rider preparation and protective gear
  • Street strategies and risk awareness
  • Cornering, braking, and swerving principles
  • Handling special situations and hazards

Part 2 — Riding Range

~10 hours over 2 days, ~5 hrs/day, motorcycle provided

You'll put everything into practice on a closed parking lot range with a motorcycle we provide. Your MSF-certified Rider Coach guides you through progressively more complex exercises until you're ready for the skills evaluation.

  • Clutch friction zone and basic gear shifting
  • Straight-line riding and controlled stops
  • Low-speed maneuvering and tight turns
  • Maximum braking technique
  • Cornering, swerving, and hazard avoidance
  • 25-question written test + riding skills evaluation

Deep-Dive Each Range Exercise

Each of the 14 MSF BRC range exercises has a full write-up covering what you'll do, why it matters, and what to watch out for. Read them before your class to arrive prepared.

E1Motorcycle FamiliarizationGet acquainted with your motorcycle's controls, learn to walk it with the engine off, and build the muscle memory you'll rely on for every exercise that follows.E2Using the Friction ZoneDiscover the sweet spot in the clutch lever that lets you ease the bike forward smoothly — the single most important skill for low-speed control.E3Starting and StoppingPractice pulling away from a stop and bringing the bike to a controlled, balanced halt — the two actions you'll perform hundreds of times every ride.E4Shifting and StoppingLearn to move smoothly through the gears as you accelerate, then downshift and brake to a clean stop — essential for riding on real streets.E5Cone WeaveThread your way through a line of cones to sharpen your ability to steer precisely and shift your weight at low speeds without losing balance.E6CountersteeringUnderstand why pushing forward on the inside handlebar — not leaning alone — is what steers a motorcycle at speed, and practice making it instinctive.E7Quick Stops & Tight TurnsCombine hard braking with slow-speed tight turns in one drill, so you can both stop fast in an emergency and navigate parking lots with confidence.E8Stopping DistanceApply maximum braking force from a set speed to feel exactly how much room your bike needs — and train yourself to squeeze both brakes together, not grab.E9U-Turn BoxExecute a tight U-turn inside a marked box, developing the head-turn, clutch control, and counterbalance technique that makes low-speed turning feel natural.E10Stopping in a CurveLearn how to safely brake while already leaned into a corner — a critical skill for avoiding obstacles that appear mid-turn.E11Curve JudgmentPick the right entry speed and line through a curve so you're never mid-corner wishing you'd slowed down sooner.E12Multiple Curves & Lane ChangesString a series of curves together and mix in quick lane changes, simulating the real-world rhythm of highway on-ramps and winding back roads.E13Obstacle Crossing & SwervePractice riding over unavoidable debris and executing a rapid swerve around a sudden hazard — two techniques that can prevent crashes on real roads.E14Skill Practice — Final ReviewRun through all the skills one final time, sharpen any weak points, and build the confidence you need to pass the riding evaluation.
