Question 1

How long is the MSF Basic Rider Course?

Accepted Answer

The BRC is 15 hours total — approximately 5 hours of self-paced MSF eCourse learning completed at home, plus 10 hours of riding on a closed range over 2 days (~5 hours each day). All BRC courses in Florida are 15 hours; the difference between schools is cost, schedule, and availability. For Tampa Motorcycle Training, range days run approximately 8:30 AM – 2:30/3:00 PM. Course times may shift depending on weather — we ride rain or shine, but will pause for very heavy rain or thunder.

Question 2

How many students are in each class?

Accepted Answer

We register a maximum of 8 riders per course with 1 MSF-certified Rider Coach. That 8:1 ratio gives everyone a chance to learn, get individual attention, and keeps the pace focused and efficient.

Question 3

What kind of motorcycles do you provide for the course?

Accepted Answer

We use 250cc starter motorcycles — ideal for learning in a controlled environment and emphasizing low-speed handling. Models include Honda Rebels, Suzuki GZs, Honda Nighthawks, and a 150cc scooter depending on availability. Your coach will match you with the best fit for your height and comfort.

Question 4

Do I need to bring my own motorcycle?

Accepted Answer

Nope! Tampa Motorcycle Training provides training motorcycles for the Basic Rider Course. You do not need to own or bring a motorcycle.

Question 5

Can I use my own motorcycle for the course?

Accepted Answer

No. We do not allow riders to use their own motorcycle for insurance reasons. All students ride the bikes we provide at the range.

Question 6

I'm short (or tall) — will I be able to participate in the Basic Rider Course?

Accepted Answer

Yes! We use three 250cc models with seat heights from 25.5 to 30 inches to accommodate different heights and builds. Honda Rebel 250 (25.5–26.5 in.), Suzuki GZ 250 (27.8–28 in.), Honda Nighthawk 250 (29.7–30 in.). Your coach will factor in your individual build and assign the most comfortable bike.

Question 7

What gear do I need to bring to the motorcycle training range?

Accepted Answer

Required by MSF guidelines — no exceptions: full shoe or boot covering the ankle (no low-cut shoes, sandals, or canvas sneakers), long pants, long-sleeve shirt, gloves (loaner pairs available), DOT-approved helmet (loaners available). Sunglasses are optional but recommended. Failure to wear required gear means you cannot participate. We provide bottled water. Check the weather 24 hours before and dress for Florida heat — performance fabrics breathe better than cotton.

Question 8

Does the Basic Rider Course run in the rain?

Accepted Answer

Yes — we ride rain or shine. We will pause for very heavy rain or thunder, but light rain is part of the experience. Check the forecast and bring a rain layer you can ride in.

Question 9

What is the MSF eCourse and when do I complete it?

Accepted Answer

The MSF eCourse is Part 1 of the BRC — approximately 5 hours of self-paced online learning covering motorcycle controls, street strategies, risk awareness, and more. A link to sign up is provided in your registration confirmation email. Complete it before your first range day, then email or text your completion certificate to the instructor. The eCourse fee is included in your registration cost.

Question 10

Can someone under 18 take the MSF Basic Rider Course?

Accepted Answer

Yes — riders as young as 16 can enroll. Requirements for minors: must be at least 16 years old, must hold a valid Florida learner's license or driver's license, and must have held that license for at least one year with no traffic convictions. Additionally, a parent or legal guardian must sign the MSF Course Waiver. A parent/guardian must sign in person on Day 1, or the student must bring a notarized signed copy. Minors will not be permitted to ride without it.

Question 11

What happens after I complete the Basic Rider Course in Florida?

Accepted Answer

On Day 2 we issue a BRC Completion Certificate. Take it to a Tax Collector office (DMV) in your home county. The DMV looks up your completion record and adds a Class M motorcycle endorsement to your Florida driver's license. No additional riding test at the DMV is required. CDL holders: confirm the DMV does not accidentally remove any CDL endorsements when updating your license.

Question 12

Do I need to take a riding test at the Florida DMV?

Accepted Answer

Nope! As part of the Basic Rider Course, you take a multiple-choice written test administered by us, and a riding skills evaluation at the range. Once you pass both, you register at the DMV with NO additional testing required.

Question 13

How long do I have to go to the Florida DMV after completing the course?

Accepted Answer

We always recommend going as soon as possible. Completion cards are valid for one year from the date of issue. If you fail to register your motorcycle endorsement within a year, the DMV will not recognize your course completion record and you will have to take the BRC again.

Question 14

What's the difference between a 2-wheel and 3-wheel motorcycle endorsement in Florida?

Accepted Answer

In Florida, a 2-wheel motorcycle endorsement lets you ride both 2-wheel motorcycles and 3-wheel trikes. A 3-wheel-only endorsement restricts you to trikes. The BRC we provide qualifies you for a 2-wheel endorsement. If your intention is to ride a trike exclusively, call us and we'll help you determine the right course.

Question 15

I have an out-of-state driver's license — can I still take the Basic Rider Course?

Accepted Answer

Yes, absolutely! During registration, make sure your DL state and zip code are set correctly. Once the course is completed, take your license to a Florida Tax Collector office (DMV) to register your motorcycle endorsement in the state of Florida.

Question 16

My driver's license is expired or suspended — can I take the motorcycle class?

Accepted Answer

No. The State of Florida requires all riders to have a valid driver's license or permit. If your license is suspended or expired, we cannot enroll you into the class. Please resolve your license status before registering.

Question 17

I'm relocating to Florida but already have a motorcycle endorsement from another state — do I need to retake the course?

Accepted Answer

Nope! Florida recognizes motorcycle endorsements from other states. When you convert to a Florida driver's license, your endorsement transfers. This depends on reciprocal license agreements — contact the Florida DHSMV for your specific situation.

Question 18

I'm moving out of Florida — can I take the BRC here and register it in another state?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the destination state's reciprocal license agreements. In some states it's seamless; in others you may need additional steps. Check the motorcycle license requirements and reciprocal agreements in your destination state, and speak with that state's DMV before taking the course in Florida.

Question 19

I'm in the military stationed in Florida — what happens to my BRC completion when I relocate?

Accepted Answer

Bases generally require the BRC Completion Card even if you already have a motorcycle license. Keep your completion card safe — the cards are serialized and a replacement cannot be issued if lost. Some bases also require the Advanced Rider Course (ARC) to ride on base. Check with your base admin or the base you're relocating to for their specific requirements. If a letter of completion is needed, contact us and we'll help.

Question 20

I passed the course but the Florida DMV can't find my information — what do I do?

Accepted Answer

Call or text us at (813) 670-7334 for help. Typically this is a mismatch with the driver's license number, date of birth, or completion card number. In most cases it can be resolved quickly.

Question 21

How can I check whether my Florida driver's license is valid before registering?

Accepted Answer

Florida provides a DHSMV website to check your driver's license status — the result shows 'valid' or 'invalid.' Visit flhsmv.gov to use the Driver License Check tool.

Question 22

Do I need motorcycle insurance to take the course or get a Florida motorcycle endorsement?

Accepted Answer

To take the Basic Rider Course, you do not need insurance. For riding on public roads, we recommend carrying motorcycle insurance the same as you would car insurance — consult an insurance agent or attorney specializing in motorcycles for authoritative guidance.

Question 23

How much does the Basic Rider Course cost in Tampa Bay?

Accepted Answer

Weekday classes (Mon–Tue or Thu–Fri) are $189. Weekend classes (Sat–Sun) are $198. Both include the MSF eCourse fee, training motorcycle, and loaner helmets and gloves if needed. Group discounts are available for 3 or more riders — call (813) 670-7334 for details.

Question 24

Do you offer group rates for the motorcycle course?

Accepted Answer

Yes! If you have 3 or more riders, contact us at (813) 670-7334 to discuss group details.

Question 25

What is the cancellation and refund policy?

Accepted Answer

Cancel 72+ hours before class: full refund, no questions asked. Rescheduling is free with 72+ hours notice. Cancel within 72 hours or no-show: no refund — small class sizes cannot be filled last-minute. Late reschedule: contact (813) 670-7334, a $100 rescheduling fee applies.

Question 26

How do I reschedule my motorcycle class?

Accepted Answer

Outside of 72 hours, rescheduling is free — use the reschedule link in your confirmation email, or call/text (813) 670-7334 with your full name, original booking date, and desired new date. Inside 72 hours, call us — a $100 fee applies.

Question 27

How long does a refund take?

Accepted Answer

Refunds typically credit back within 72 hours depending on your bank or credit card issuer. For help, call (813) 670-7334.

Question 28

I need to repeat the Basic Rider Course — how long do I have to reschedule?

Accepted Answer

Contact us as soon as possible. If you were counseled out of the course by the coach, we'll typically get you rescheduled at the soonest availability or put you on the standby list. Waiting past 30–45 days without making contact means you'll need to pay for the course again due to limited availability.
