What to Expect at the
MSF Basic Rider Course
A complete walkthrough of the 2-day course — from the eCourse you do at home to the moment you walk away with your BRC Completion Card.
The MSF Basic Rider Course (BRC) is a two-day, hands-on motorcycle safety program using curriculum developed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. In Florida, completing an FRTP-authorized BRC is legally required before adding a motorcycle endorsement to your license — and passing it waives the DHSMV riding skills test entirely.
Here's exactly what happens, from registration to completion card.
What to Bring
Bring your own helmet and gloves if you have them. Loaners are available if you need them — just let us know when you register. Motorcycle and MSF Rider Handbook are provided.
Who Can Enroll
- Must be 16 years or older
- Must hold at least a valid Florida learner's license (or full driver's license)
- Riders under 18 must have held their learner's license for at least one year with no traffic convictions
- Riders under 18 require a Parental Consent Waiver — a parent/guardian signs in person on Day 1, or the student brings a notarized signed copy
- Must be able to balance and ride a bicycle — the foundational skill everything else builds on
- Must be able to read and understand English for the written knowledge test
Course Timeline
Complete the MSF eCourse Online
- After registering, you'll receive a link to the MSF online eCourse — approximately 5 hours of self-paced learning covering motorcycle theory, controls, risk management, and street strategies. The fee is included in your course tuition.
- Work through it on any device at your own pace. Email or text your eCourse completion certificate to your instructor before your first in-person day — you will not be permitted to take the knowledge test without it.
- The eCourse covers: motorcycle types and controls, the T-CLOCS pre-ride inspection process, protective gear, risk management strategies, basic street positioning, and foundational riding techniques. Take it seriously — the written knowledge test draws directly from this material.
Classroom Session & Knowledge Test
- You'll meet your RiderCoach and the rest of your class — capped at 8 students, so it's a focused, hands-on group from the start.
- The classroom session reinforces the eCourse content through group discussion and activities. Your RiderCoach covers the key concepts, answers questions, and makes sure everyone understands the material before getting on a bike.
- Topics include motorcycle controls and operation, the T-CLOCS pre-ride inspection method, personal protective gear, and an overview of the risk management strategies used throughout the range exercises.
- The 25-question written knowledge test covers the same material as the eCourse. Most students who engaged with the eCourse find it straightforward.
First Range Session — Getting on the Bike
- You'll meet your assigned motorcycle — a lightweight 250cc training bike provided by Tampa MT, matched to your height and build by your RiderCoach. Helmets and gloves are also provided; just bring your eye protection, boots, long pants, and long-sleeve shirt.
- Your RiderCoach walks you through the FINE-C start procedure — the engine pre-start routine used every time you start a motorcycle — and you'll get comfortable sitting on the bike before anything moves.
- Early exercises focus on the friction zone: the engagement point in the clutch that allows smooth starts and low-speed control. This is the foundation everything else builds on, and you'll spend real time getting comfortable with it.
- By the end of Day 1 you'll be starting, stopping, and moving through basic exercises at low speed. Don't worry if it feels unfamiliar — every rider in that class started from exactly the same place.
Range Session — Building Core Skills
- Day 2 opens with a review of Day 1 fundamentals, then progressively builds toward more complex exercises as your confidence grows.
- You'll practice cornering and turning — learning to lean the motorcycle through curves using the Slow-Look-Press-Roll technique. Exercises build in complexity as speed and precision improve.
- Other skills covered include gear shifting, controlled stops from higher speeds, quick-stop technique, low-speed maneuvering through tight U-turns and confined spaces, swerving around obstacles, and negotiating multiple curves in sequence.
- RiderCoaches observe and give real-time feedback throughout. Ask questions whenever something isn't clicking — that's what the small class size is designed for.
Riding Skills Evaluation — Pass and You're Done
- The final skills evaluation is a scored set of exercises — the same skills you've been practicing throughout the course. No surprises. Your RiderCoach evaluates your technique while you ride.
- The evaluation includes exercises such as a cone weave, normal stop, U-turn within a marked space, quick stop, obstacle swerve, and a cornering maneuver. Evaluators score control, precision, and safe habits throughout.
- Students who pass receive their BRC Completion Card on the spot. Bring it to any DHSMV service center along with your driver's license and a valid ID to add the motorcycle endorsement — and skip the DMV riding skills test entirely.
- If you don't pass on your first attempt, talk to your RiderCoach about what to work on. Many students succeed on a second course attempt — and your RiderCoach will tell you honestly what needs practice.
The Knowledge Test — What to Study
The written test is 25 multiple-choice questions, conducted in English, based entirely on the eCourse and classroom content. Focus on the foundational concepts the MSF emphasizes throughout the course:
The Riding Evaluation — What to Know
The riding evaluation scores your performance on a set of range exercises within marked boundaries. Points are deducted for errors, and accumulating too many means you don't pass. Every exercise in the evaluation is something you've already practiced — your RiderCoach won't introduce anything new.
Exercises in the evaluation include a cone weave, normal stop, U-turn within a marked space, quick stop, obstacle swerve, and a cornering maneuver. Evaluators are watching for smooth, controlled inputs throughout — not perfection, but demonstrated ability to operate a motorcycle safely. You can review exactly what each exercise requires in our complete MSF BRC exercise guide.
The Most Important Tip for Evaluation Day
Look where you want to go — not at the front wheel, not at the cone you're trying to miss. The motorcycle follows your eyes. In every tight maneuver, turn your head toward the exit of the turn early and the bike will follow. Your RiderCoach will reinforce this throughout practice — trust it when it counts.
After You Pass — The BRC Completion Card
Pass both the knowledge test and the riding evaluation and you receive your BRC Completion Card on the final day of class. This card is valid for one year and is your key to the motorcycle endorsement.
- Waives the DHSMV motorcycle riding skills test — visit any DHSMV service center with your card, your driver's license, and a valid ID to add the endorsement to your license.
- Potential insurance discount — many insurers reduce rates for riders who've completed an MSF course. Ask your provider.
- Gear discount — 15% off at Cycle Gear Tampa through our affiliate link. See the Partners & Discounts page.
Visit the DHSMV promptly — your BRC Completion Card is only valid for one year from your course date. If it expires before you add the endorsement, you'd need to retake the course or schedule a separate DMV riding skills test.
Never Ridden a Motorcycle? That's the Point.
The majority of our students have never sat on a motorcycle before Day 1. The BRC is built for complete beginners — bikes are lightweight, exercises start at walking speed, and the class moves at a pace where nearly everyone succeeds.
The one prerequisite: be able to balance a bicycle. That foundation is all the course needs to build from. Beyond that — wear your gear, follow your RiderCoach's instructions, and keep your eyes up.
